Ask most people what matters when they're choosing a shed and they'll talk about steel strength, span, price, and how quickly it can go up. All fair questions. But there's one thing almost nobody thinks to ask about, mainly because you can't see it coming until it's too late:

Poor after-sales support is one of the biggest smears on the shed industry, and it tends to follow the same pattern. The experience up front is polished. You build a good rapport with the team, the impression is excellent, and every question gets answered. Then you pay a large deposit on the strength of that relationship, and the phone goes quiet.

It's a hard thing to see coming. Everything looks fine right up until it isn't.

Not getting updates on your shed kit is frustrating enough on its own. It gets worse when something actually goes wrong, and with all the logistics involved in getting a big shed kit designed, made and freighted across the country, the odd hiccup comes with the territory. A few bolts might be short. A component might get knocked about in transit. A delivery date might quietly move.

The real trouble is what happens next. Some companies won't tell you about a delay until you ring up to chase it. When parts are missing or damaged, you're left in the dark and expected to pick through a confusing bill of materials to prove what isn't there. Then the blame starts moving around. The company points at the steel manufacturer, the manufacturer points back, and you're stuck in the middle of an argument you never asked to be part of. And if a warranty problem turns up down the track, good luck getting anyone to take it on.

Usually it comes down to money. In a lot of businesses the front end is well looked after and the back end is an afterthought. There's a budget to win the sale and not much left over to fix the problem once the deposit has cleared.

And we stay accountable: when something is our fault, or a supplier's, we own it and we sort it out, instead of leaving you to referee a blame game between us and the manufacturer.

A lot of that comes down to keeping the whole operation close to home. When the shed supplier, the steel (BlueScope) and the manufacturer (Lysaght) are all based in Australia, there's simply less that can go wrong. Parts don't have as far to travel, everyone's working to the same standards and speaking the same language, and you're not waiting days on a reply from someone several timezones away. Fewer links in the chain means fewer places for things to fall through.

There are no nasty surprises built into the kit itself, either. Gutters and downpipes are included, and every shed comes with high-tensile bolts and class 4 fasteners as standard, so you're not finding out halfway through the build that half the shed kit still has to be purchased. Our telephone construction support is there too, at no extra cost, so you're never left stranded with a plan and a problem.
