At Now Buildings, we know that your shed isn’t just a shed. Your shed is the last line of defence against the elements, protecting your machinery, vehicles, stock, tools and feed from the extreme weather conditions Australia has to offer. Because of this, your shed needs to be built with the strongest material available. That’s why we choose to use COLORBOND® steel.
There is nothing like genuine COLORBOND® steel. Owned and manufactured by BlueScope, COLORBOND® steel has been tried and tested in a vast range of Australian conditions for over 50 years. Whether your shed needs to stand up to extreme heat or snow, rain or hail, a tropical or temperate climate, COLORBOND® steel has got you covered (literally). BlueScope is continually testing and improving the composition of COLORBOND® steel, with thousands of panels placed throughout Australia undergoing exposure testing for corrosion resistance, durability and application.
So what is COLORBOND® steel exactly? COLORBOND® steel is made up of 5 individual layers and is manufactured to meet Australian standards (AS1397 and AS/NZS 2728).
- The steel base is manufactured to meet relevant Australian Standards, ensuring strict adherence to the required grade and strength.
- The base is then coated in BlueScope’s industry-leading metallic coating incorporating Activate® technology*, to provide enhanced corrosion resistance.
- A thin pre-treatment layer is applied to optimise the adhesion of further coatings.
- A corrosion inhibitive primer is baked onto the surface.
- A topcoat of specially developed, exterior grade paint is baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking and blistering and to ensure the finish retains its look for longer.

COLORBOND® steel comes in 22 different colours, ranging from contemporary colours like IRONSTONE® for a more modern look, to classic colours like MANOR RED® for a heritage look. Choosing to build your shed in COLORBOND® steel will ensure it stands out, whether in the paddock or an industrial yard. A COLORBOND® shed looks fresh and professional in an industrial environment and will blend seamlessly with other buildings on site.
We have found that the majority of Now Buildings customers choose a neutral colour for their walls and roof and use a feature colour for their gutters, downpipes, PA door or roller door. The most popular colours among Now Buildings customers include, SURFMIST®, SHALE GREY® and CLASSIC CREAM®.
Choosing a lighter colour for your shed walls and roof can also improve the climate inside your shed. We all know that the colour of the roof, whether it be on your home or shed, can make a difference to the amount of heat the building absorbs. Standard COLORBOND® steel colours (except Night Sky®) all feature solar reflective technology called Thermatech®, which increases the steel’s ability to reflect the sun’s heat. This improves the climate inside the shed, making it more comfortable to work from, even on the hottest days.
Maintaining COLORBOND® steel is as simple as giving it a wash with clean, fresh water every few months. It is best to periodically wash the inside of the shed as well, where dirt, insects and cobwebs congregate, such as the corners, under the eaves and the tops of roller doors and PA doors.
